Photography blogs I follow and why
Lately, I have been learning some valuable information and reading some great things on the various blogs that I follow. I’ve shared some of the posts with a few friends of mine and thought that I should go one step further and share my favorite blogs with all of you as well. Below you’ll find my top ten favorite blogs with a short explanation for why they’re on this list.
If there’s a blog that you find valuable and it’s not on this list, be sure to share it with the rest of us in the comment section!
1.) Chase Jarvis
Plain and simple, Chase Jarvis is one of the most well-known commercial photographers in the industry. He knows his stuff and is always wanting and willing to share his knowledge. His behind-the-scenes videos and live video streams during photoshoots give you an inside look at what it’s like to be on set with him and his team. If you’re in a slump and you need some inspiration, be sure to check out his blog and YouTube channel.
On a side note, Jarvis has also created a free online educational community called creativeLIVE which offers live video webinars taught by the photo industry’s leading professionals.
2.) Zack Arias
Zack Arias is a leading editorial music photographer who is based in Atlanta. He is also known for his OneLight Workshop and whicked awesome gotee. He is another photographer that I pay close attention to because of his willingness to also share what he knows. As another one of my sources of inspiration, he kicks my ass into gear when I need it with his amazing work. I recently had the opportunity to meet Arias in person, which was incredible. I’ll be writing more on that awesome occasion in a future post.
3.) Strobist
David Hobby has created the most popular resource for anyone wanting to learn about using off-camera flash. His posts sometimes include do-it-yourself setups that save your wallet and interesting equipment hacks. As someone who is addicted to off-camera flash, I find his blog to be a valuable resource when researching new lights or wanting to simply learn something new.
4.) DIYPhotography
Udi Tirosh’s blog was started when he was an amateur photographer in need of studio equipment. Since then, he has devoted his time to providing DIY solutions to photographers around the world who are starting out in studio photography or may not be able to afford the equipment. I love this blog because of my enjoyment about making my own equipment if possible.
5.) Photoshelter
The guys at PhotoShelter do a great job of doing what they do, providing you with great tips for working in the photo industry. The well-rounded blog offers tips on shooting, equipment, websites, SEO, and much more. One big thing that I love about them is that they occasionally release downloadable documents and reports about various topics.
6.) Strictly Business (ASMP.org)
The American Society of Media Photographers brings you crucial information about the business side of photography. Topics such as copyright, licensing, and releases can often be intimidating to photographers interested in starting or even going pro. Strictly Business delivers these topics to its readers so they actually understand the legal aspects of the business instead of being fearful of them.
7.) Going Pro 2010
Scott Bourne and Skip Cohen have teamed up to help educate photographers looking to become professionals in the industry. Their frequent blog posts touch on questions that photographers often have when starting out in the industry. I also highly recommend subscribing to their podcasts as they reinforce everything that you will read on their blog.
8.) PhotographyBLOG
If you want to stay up to date with the latest photography equipment, this is a great place to frequently visit or throw in your Google Reader. They’re always busting out posts on the latest and greatest gear to hit the shelves. They also provide news like firmware updates for cameras and other industry news.
9.) No Plastic Sleeves
I love this blog! It shows how creative people can get with presenting their photography. If you’re in the process or looking to rebranding yourself, I highly recommend checking this place out. You will see some great examples of business cards, portfolios, websites, etc. It’s a great place to go to get ideas and start the fun journey.
10.) What the Duck
My day isn’t complete unless I read the day’s edition of this comic strip. Go read some of the best strips and you’ll soon be addicted like me!
I hope you enjoyed the list! And remember, if there is a blog you think is worth being on this list, be sure to add it in the comments below for everyone else to check out too!
